. : A Sea Tale : .

This is the updated animation for our Sea tales animation. There is still a fair bit to complete but we are very happy with the way things are looking.

. : The devil is in the detail : .

For this task we were required to replicate a real world close up environment in 3d. We were encouraged to take photo's of the environment we would be trying to replicate as this would help us recreate the 3d scene more accurately.

I felt confident with modelling the environment, I used textures to pull out a lot of detail, areas such as the top of the window, where the cavity just sat too flat as a texture, I really needed  to model in order to maintain the realism desired.

. : Motion Studies Showreel : .

A show-reel to demonstrate my studies towards motion.

. : 2d Projection : .

Before we started this task, I had previously used the 2d layering technique to create depth. I have previously created a few scenes in this manor using Adobe's After Effects but whilst learning Toonboom  for this project I'd definitely favour the software for the process.

I feel the move throughout the space is convincing but could have heightened the resolution even more to remove distortion that can be seen around the edge of the buildings.

. : Experimental Animation Testing : .

I have been playing around with some ideas to contribute and inspire the idea for my Experimental animation project. I feel that the washing machine will best suit the clip of audio i have chosen to animate to. As the audio clip is repetitive, i feel that interest can be drawn through subtle changes within the chamber of the machine.

: Emotion with Motion :

My task was to create three straight walks which could be easily identified as an emotion. I'm not as happy with the macho walk at the bottom as the arms don't seem to look very organic. I did want to create an almost robotic swing, but feel i went too far with it.

. : Camtrack : .

This was one of the first characters I ever created.

Camtrack is a service robot who maintains the upkeep of military vehicles.

He is not controlled remotely.

Autodesk 3DS Max

. : Lost at Sea : .

A concept drawing for a university project. I painted this in Sketchbook pro for iPad.

. : 1968 Ferrari Dino : .

Tonight's session was proving fairly difficult. I managed to finish the door scoop without too many problems but my reference pictures haven't allowed me to completely understand how the window trim sits. If I can't find any close up reference pictures of the trim I will just have to recreate how I think it sits from the pictures I have.

One of the main challenges I have found whilst modelling the Dino is in order to create the cutouts, for example the indicators, I needed enough polygons to produce the right shape but not so many as to create creases in undesired places. I'm trying to keep the topology as neat as I can, it's always difficult to identify the source of a problem if your workspace is cluttered.

A little more progress has been made since my last screen grab, here is the latest. I have been working on this model in between lectures and quite a busy schedule, so the updates may be a little slow.

I have started to model another one of my favourite cars. The 1968 Ferrari Dino 206 GT. It is a mighty fine looking car and I wanted to replicate it in 3d. I gathered a few reference pictures to ease the modelling process.

. : Plunger Gun Poses : .

Have been playing around with some poses for the plunger gun I modeled. I'd like to animate it soon but thought I'd block some poses out first.

. : Semester One Showreel : .

Here is my Falmouth University semester one Showreel. I am very happy with the progression I have made within the first few months of the course.

. : Box Push : .

My task was to animate a character pushing a box. It was important to get that sense of weight. I feel that I could have improved upon the anticipation.

. : Loading Up : .

This was a project completed by Jacob Pickering and I. We wanted to combine live footage  with VFX to create a composition in which 2 characters were loading up for a video game.

. : A Change in Emotion : .

A video created for university, my task was to replicate a change in emotion, I feel that i satisfied the brief. I tried to make the timing of his reaction quite comical. I have also included the video i used as reference.

. : An Heavy Weight : .

My task was to perform a heavy weight lift, paying special concern to anticipation. I feel the anticipation is good but the ball does look a bit light when it is in the air.

. : Lip Sync : .

My task was to take this audio clip from Diehard with a vengeance and sync the speech to the action of this pre-rigged character I animated. I am happy with the overall outcome but will revise the video in the near future. I feel that I have over animated, the mouth doesn't need to open as much as it does and the expression and performance is still quite flat.

. : Typography : .

Here is a little typography test created in after effects. The vocal sample is taken from the film Network.

. : Wings Trailer : .

This was a trailer that Jacob Pickering and I made for our final project at college. The trailer is for a game conceptualised by ourselves called Wings. Everything within the video is created and animated by ourselves.

We used, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3DS Max, After Effects and Adobe Photoshop.

. : Mission Briefing : .

This was a video that I created in college. The idea was to replicate a motion graphics technique used in a video game. I wanted to replicate a mission brief technique, commonly seen in a lot of first person shooters.

. : Sea Test Shot : .

For a university project we were required to create a test shot of the ocean. We could create it in any style we wanted. I think i should have used a different medium to create it. I am very much a 3d man but would like to get into a good routine and widen my horizons. I don't want to be blinkered, this will only limit my creative potential.

On Reflection, the ocean is too silky but I do like the specular highlights of the sun on the surface.

. : Synth is Eyes : .

So I have been fairly inactive for a little while now however I have still been working hard to improve my portfolio. I'm going to kick start my blog back up with a mixed media image that I created. This image started as a pencil drawing. It is more illustrative than my usual doodles and I wanted to build on that by scanning the image in and working on top of it in a digital painting package. I scanned the drawing in and transferred to my iPad. I then used Sketchbook Pro for iPad as a painting package and completed the image within.

I find the iPad an incredible way to paint. Although the painting packages on the iPad don't have quite as many tools as you will find to their pc/mac counterparts, Sketchbook Pro is getting there and still provides enough to not feel hindered.  Until I have enough money to buy a Cintiq this will be my graphics tablet.
